Derute Consulting Cooperative is proud to support the National Equity Project and their efforts to deepen the competencies of local leaders to make the institutional and structural changes necessary to advance racial equity in Grand Rapids, MI. Derute will design and implement a capacity-building evaluation to answer the following questions:

  • How do individual leaders see, engage, and act toward racial equity?

  • What actions do leadership teams take in their organizations and contexts toward specific racial equity outcomes?

  • How do equity networks of participating leaders change over and beyond the training cycles?

  • What are the network characteristics of leadership teams that take actions toward specific racial equity outcomes?

Our project team is comprised of:

  • Dr. Emery Petchauer is an education scholar who specializes in teacher development, urban education, and community-based initiatives. He regularly consults with state and local organizations around these topics, using human centered design, continuous improvement cycles, and applied learning.

  • Jeffery Roman is an equity advocate, educator, organizer, and strategist working with grassroots, philanthropy, systems leaders, and the public and nonprofit sectors. He is a former Racial Equity and Youth Development Fellow with the Aspen Institute Roundtable on Community Change and served as a commissioner on the City of Milwaukee Equal Rights Commission (ERC) from 2011-18, including five years as chair.

  • Dr. Anica Bowe earned a Ph.D. in Education Psychology with a focus in Quantitative Methods in Education at the University of Minnesota. Her evaluation practices focus on school and community-based initiatives and engaging urban youth in participatory action research.

  • Matthew Duncan is a youth development advocate and Hip Hop artist dedicated to empowering youth and communities through the artistic and philosophical elements of Hip Hop. A native and resident of Grand Rapids, he and a team of artists currently serve the students at Covenant House Academy by providing a Hip Hop mentoring program for homeless and at risk teens.
